Does having paid software help get new members?

Paid forum software does have a more professional look I feel but I don't feel that it will help you to get more members if I am honest. It's all about the look and feel as well as the content and quality and also how friendly the forum is as to whether members will feel pushed to want to register or even stick around.

I dont think for any forum to succeed it depends on paid or free forum software. I believe it totally based on the niche of the forum, how you promote it, do you have any comeptition in the forum that motivates your members and how you interact with members

Forum content, and what you offer the community is what truly get's your members to stay, but the look of your forum is what get's them to browse your forum initially. 90% of people find that paid forum software looks way better than the freeware you can use. However, there are plenty of big MyBB forums out there, but there are more, bigger, paid forums out there. It's all up to you on that, as long as you offer something unique, and have means of advertising your site will get big regardless of the software.

It depends the features. There are many comparisons. For instance a fully edited phpBB can be better than a Normal Xenforo.

Well, having paid software keeps you from having a bad rep of nulling software. But people don't care.
