Seo-wise, does a favicon or an icon on your tab do anything to help? I mean it looks good, but other than that any practical functions?

Fav icon is important to a website, it a unique identity to your site and make your site easily identifiable on web browser.

Yes, I personally like to pin tabs in my browser so fav icon is really a life saver because it's easier to identify the websites which I find helpful and practical.

I think that it can be helpful in terms of the navigation as well because even though it looks good if someone has a lot of tabs open then it could help them quickly change between them.

If you want to build a big website, a brandable website, an online store, or an ecommerce platform, having a favicon can help yo in your purpose. If your website is just a small blog or forum, it does not matter much.

I don't believe that a favicon does much at all for SEO but it does help better in your members and visitors being able to identify your site on their tabs when they are browsing the internet.

I know for a while we didn't have a favicon for our forum and many used to ask about it due to it being easier to recognise the tab.

Yes, a favicon does a lot, even though it's a small detail. It plays a significant role in web design and user experience. The favicon, that little icon you see in your browser tab, helps in brand recognition and makes a website look more professional.
