Do you find that you end up doing all the forum-to-forum promotional work for your site which including paying for reviews, packages, posting threads here there and everywhere or does your staff actually help you out?

Personally, our staff don't help us but we don't really expect them too. We have our current user base and we're happy with it so we do only minimal advertising anyway!

I have asked a fellow staff member just to put us in her signature on forums but not go out and actively advertise, I don't expect them to, that is unless I hire someone for advertising only, other than that it isn't in their job criteria, if they do it's something extra.

Some people expect staff to advertise on a new forum- when they aren't paying them anything.... I think staff will advertise if they truly believe the forum is something special.... :)

You really need to set the roles for the staff and not make them do more than they're supposed to. I'd expect the forum owner(s) to work on the promotion, it's their forum, their job. Moderators should help with the cleaning and be a little active too. That's what they need to do in my forums. it's not their business to promote the forums. of course, if they feel like it, it's OK, but their role is not this.

In my case, any moderator I select would be doing the moderating in his free time. I certainly wouldn't expect them to go out of their way to promote us elsewhere. A forum signature would be nice but that's up to them.

I have in the past bumped a few of the WGBB promotion topics because I really want more people to know about, and join, this forum! :)

See. I had a problem on the first forum I ran, and that was that I was the sole and only one promoting it. It fell behind with activity as often I simply couldn't keep up.

The second time. I had such helpful staff, and even members were great!

I've never personally asked my staff to promote. But because of the nature of my site and because the amount of traffic helps THEIR pockets, they normally promote when they can without me asking.

I can understand that. In all honestly, if they're being paid, that does mean technically they should shoulder at least some of the traffic responsibility.
Even if they are volunteers, if they actually want to help the forum, they should be obligated to promote
