Do you really think winning any SOTM/FOTM competition gives you lots of new members?

If you have won it, what were your results, if not what do you think?
Most of the websites which conduct this competition will simply put a banner or a topic redirecting to the winning website. But imho thats not much. You will get some members but not too many.

I don't personally think so no, sure you get the odd bit of exposure and any exposure is good exposure in my eyes but member wise, I don't think you would get much if any. Sure, people will come and visit, maybe sign up to see what else you have but I rarely see a place winning such a competition and having an explosion of people joining and such.

In my opinion it offers no real advantage, heck; I usually never visit the SOTM on forums I'm on.
Like Haze said, any exposure is good; so it's always a plus when you win it.

Back in my forum admining days I never noticed a difference when we won a FOTW or not. It gets your name out there sure, but no results.

Recently I was engaged in a heated battle for FOTM on Forum Promotion, and we actually got quite a few new members from it
So I think it all depends on where you're entering/winning
