Whether it be a blog or a forum, both of these options give the members a chance to upload their own avatar to the site. Many will choose to use a photo of their pet or maybe a photo of themselves whereas some will use their logo for their site and others may choose to use a picture of something they are a fan of as an avatar.

Some people do tend to go a little too far though when it comes to avatars, I have had it happen on a forum I ran where they would post NSFW images as their avatars and we had to remove them and ask them to use a more appropriate avatar.

Do you have rules when it comes to uploading an avatar to your blog or forum and have you ever had someone use a NSFW image as an avatar on your site? How did you deal with that?

I can echo the previous content. As long as it's NOT anything that comes under the umbrella of being NSFW content (Not Safe for Work), for example, pornography, there are no restrictions on what users can upload. If an avatar has too many transitions as a GIF, I'd do the same as Cory and remove it, contacting the user to explain why.

It's only a perverts that's going to upload NSFW (Not Safe for Work) avatar on their forum accounts.

I would have them removed immediately because it's something that's clearly stated in the forum rule. Some people never get to read the forum rules, so they as they please.
Depends on what you define as not safe for work. A cartoon face yelling the f-word isn’t safe for work either.

I’d add a limit on rapid animation - anything that veers towards triggering photosensitivity/epilepsy.

Mine are laid out in the terms and rules (which you have to agree to, but most usually don't read).

Avatars & Signatures

Avatars must be in good taste. This means no vulgar or violent images, pornography, or profanity. Please don't use animated avatars (GIF) as some people have issues with moving/flashing images.
Avatars that are found to be inappropriate will be removed at the discretion of the staff.
