Contests - Are there helpful?

Do you think contests and giveaways are a good idea for forum? Some may argue that the results are only temporary and are not worth the effort. Others say that it's a great reason for exposure. Where do you stand on forum/website contests and giveaways?

I kind of think that it depends on the community. On some forums, posting contests might work because some members might actually want to win if the prizes are attractive. Personally, on my communities, contests don't seem to work too much. Very few members take part in them, and the results turn out to not be worth the money invested in the prizes.

I think contests may be effective, depending on the community and the timing, but certainly one more reason for people to share it and attract more people to the community who just may decide to stay.

I think contests encourage activity on forums and blogs, especially if they occur every couple months. Hosting contests gives the members something to look forward to and a reason aside from the norm to post on forums. In my experience, contests have helped forums.
