I'm mostly curious, as I know .gov is meant for government related sites, but can you actually purchase a .gov domain if you want to? Is there any legality to it? Like, can you get in trouble for having a .gov domain if you're not in any way associated with the government?

As far as I know, there is nothing attached to it, anyone can purchase dot.gov domain but if used illegally, there may be consequences and serious one at that.

I don't really think that is bad to buy government domain if actually you have the money, because I believe as far as the person have the money to purchase it.

It's not wrong to do that, if you are doing that for your own personal use or business. However, if you are into domain buying and selling business, and you are the type that outsource for buyers of these domain name, then you will be at loss because government bodies hardly patronize random domain sellers, theirs is strictly unknown.

I don't know if there might be a law that guides the use of .org domain name. But it is not right to use that domain name extension for our websites

I honestly don't know the rules surrounding this, but I think it isn't illegal to buy a .gov domain. It is something that we don't see often.

Buying gov. Domains... Firstly, government domains are eligible to obtain. These includes any federal, state, local, or territorial government entity or other publicly controlled entity.

I'm just getting to know that government do have their domains too. I won't want to have a government domain if I don't hold any public office.

Definitely from the name .gov most people thinks it only made for government related personnel no any body can obtain the domain

Domain name providers do not just sell out such domains without proper documentation. I knew this when I was registering my blog a few years back. If they can just give it out anyhow, scammers would take advantage of this and that can land them in trouble.

You can't buy a .gov domain just like that as an individual, there are a lot of paper Work involved in order to be able to purchase a .gov domain

Well I will approve and appreciate the effort of individuals who are of the need or intention to purchase government domain to me that is a better idea compared to some other kind of private or individual domIn which to me I sees it as something or domain that has no guarantee.

I kind of laughed while reading the comments. Most of the commentators do not know about dot gov domains yet are making thoughtless comments. Gov domains cannot be bought by any individuals or institutions except government agencies.

Dot gov domains are not for sale for general public or private institutions. Gov domains are only for government agencies such as ministries, government departments, or any kind of government websites

There are some restrictions on some domains like for example .fr or.UK or .us while they must be sure that registration is from UK country or french or united states of America otherwise they simply don't accept such request. Like the same gov domain names.

There's no trouble in any way. Just that people associate that domain extension with government and their activities.
So imagine someone coming to a dot gov site and seeing advertisment for an ebook or freelance service, he wouldn't take it serious.

I believe it is just a symbol to identify a normal website with that of government but I don't see it as a factor because it is possible for you to use it on your website as there is no law that ban people from using it.

No domain name registrar that will offer you just dot gov extension for your domain name registration. The reason is that it is only the government's that issue this extension

to buy a .gov domain without being suspicious of something? if so, would I like to take one: D or can only governments have that domain?
