Buying up domains of popular brands to sell to said brands

I don't know if something like this is legal, but I have known people to buy up domains that match popular brands, and when those companies try to register those domains, they have to reach out to the owners of said domain. I have never tried this myself, as I'm unsure it's something legal. But, if it is legal, I can see some people doing it. But, I have heard of companies outright taking the domains if they match their name, as technically it's their name and they have a right to it.

Does anyone here know the rules on something like this? I am curious.

I think businesses have already registered the domains they will be using. I hear these days people register the name of their baby who s not born yet. People have go so tech friendly that they are holding a lot of domains.

Big brands are so careful about their brand name being abused that they reserve a lot domains, for example they will buy handful of other options like net, info etc. even if they are already using dot com

This is called domain flipping business, but there are guidelines already and you shouldn't think of registering trademarked names as you could get sued.

I think for us to know the rules and regulations that guide this,but to be sure of what the rules and regulations is the only platform to get that is to search it on Google to be sure of I guess.

For domain names, there is a disadvantage to "Buy Now" - Domain Name... domainnamewire.com
It's easier to buy now, but you'll get less information on who's interested in your domain. Setting Buy Now rates on domain names is something I strongly believe in. The majority of the domains I offer are in the $1,000-$5,000 range. I don't want to waste my time fighting for domains under $5,000, and one advantage of Buy Now rates is that you're informing potential buyers.

This sounds like domain flipping business, where one gets access to sites most likely old sites then later sell to companies that need it, I heard it's profitable but it can take a long time before buyers approach you.

There is nothing ilegal in that. You are simply being smart and creative in your marketing skills. These companies will pay you a fortune for that domain

I don't think this is illegal at all because the said brand must have failed to renew the domain even after many days of warning from the domain registrant. That means the domain must have been dropped or deleted before anybody else can register it again.

I wonder how such a popular brand will be careless with their domain to the extent of losing it. If this is possible everyone would already being in the domain business looking one popular brand to lose their domain because we this is real money.

You have to be careful buying domains of brands because if they are trademarked they can get taken off of you. Google for example will do this. They have every single domain they possibly can and some people have in the past tried to buy Google domains and had them taken off of them.

It's good for more generic domains though, as it can be a quite a good way to earn money but you do need to be careful when looking at trademarked domains though.

I forgot where I had read it but not in social media but in a newspaper article or newspaper column. One example was an offline eatery that used Sony which got a complaint from the Japanese brand.

This is majorly what domain business is all about. Many people in domain business are always hunting for domain names of big organizations who failed to renew their registration or better still buys a closely related domains of those organizations and reach out to them to sell.

I just got into the domain flipping business and the first domain selling strategy that I was taught was buying up popular domain from popular brands and selling it off back to them.
