Buying second hand

Hey guys, when you buy your equipment, do you usually prefer to buy things new or do you try to find them second hand?

I was thinking that unless you know well what to look for and how to inspect the instrument, it might not always be the best idea to try to save money by acquiring a used instrument.

That said, instruments passed by people we trust are a different matter. I am more thinking about going to hunt for equipment.

What places, if any, would you recommend?

What things would you recommend to look out for when inspecting an used instrument?

As long as you can spot when there is something wrong, I don't see any problems with buying instruments 2nd hand from someone else.

If the instrument is massively expensive, I'm more likely to consider 2nd hand.
