Maybe look at some 3rd party add-ons to minimize the spam (as an example is one from Xon). Apparently staff currently depends more on the users reporting than staff actually monitoring new posts for what is readily apparent spam?
Within the last few weeks I have seen numerous singular posts (users that post one comment and not log in again) of what is readily apparent as spam on the site, typically the cryptocurrency stuff and then some PDF's related to tests or something? These users generally post 1 comment and then no more afterwards and fail to respond to comments on their posts. I don't mind helping.. but lately it has been more of a "moderating" than reporting challenge. ;)
Granted, my site does not suffer that currently, but for this site there are some XenForo add-ons that may help reduce this, even if they are paid (as I mentioned Xon's is one I am personally looking at even if I don't currently need it). Honestly, it recently almost reached the point that I had decided to stop visiting here as many of the recent/new posts were readily apparent as spam.... and some of them stayed posted for days.

Yeah the number of PDF and Crypto posts tend to keep growing each day. :S They're starting to post these links on their status's too now.
Yeah, it's one of those areas that have been abused for awhile and really need to have some additional moderation features available.
I'm sure somewhere there is yet another 3rd party add-on that allows that. I need to check over on the XF site to see if there is.

I’ve been saying this for almost a month. As if they don’t want to hear.

It is really not that hard to control if you are familiar with XF and don't mind grabbing some add-ons.
Just simply using the spam phrases and putting posts that contain those terms into moderation should work fine.

I'm pretty sure just using this function would bypass a lot of it.

If my reading is correct, just putting some of those regularly used words in their ads would kick it into manual approval requirement if they post less than 10 posts (which my example uses).
  • Spam phrases can be defined. If any of a user's first few messages matches theses phrases, an action can be taken. For example, some spammers submit messages with "watch film name online". We can match that with "watch * online" and simply block the message.
After 10 posts, they don't get hit by that. So that alone would catch a LOT of them.
