Beauty or meaning?

Should art be judged by its beauty or by its meaning?

How do you judge art?

I don't always understand the meaning behind some art, so I suppose my default answer would be beauty.

I think it should be judged by it's meaning, most pieces ugly or not has some form of meaning behind it. Though it can be hard to understand the meaning on most pieces. I tend to judge based on beauty more, for that reason alone since you can't always tell what the art represents.

Beauty is massively in the eye of the beholder. Meaning is also very subjective I think. I couldn't really say what to think when seeing something.

I wasn't sure how to answer this question myself but I like what Jason has written.
Art is subjective. What one deems art, another deems scribbles. Some can have hidden meanings that is only known by the artist themselves.

Obviously the answer is both!

I judge by beauty more ....unless the meaning of the piece has been explained to me.
