I disagree with you its one of the good things now since google update. I mean before that even the "Spam thing" as you said worked but now you have to select the article directories and you need to provide high quality unique content other wise your failing at it.

Kind of confused on your question to be honest. Article writing is a great way to be honest to help get your website out there. If you can write articles on things that are related to your website along with a link and get enough traffic to that link it can really help with traffic and exposure to your websites. Articles that give advice or tips are also great if you are able to do them.
