Making a website can be both scary and exciting! It can be hard to decide where or how to begin or who you should get advice from. Use the following advice as a foundation for all your future web design efforts.

The graphics you use are important. Remember, bitmap images can get quite large and often don't work very well while PNG images work fine. Use PNGs for images over 256 colors for text buttons and the like or use GIF files for images smaller than 256 colors. For pictures, use JPEG images.

Incorporate fixed-position navigation so the users can easily use your site. This means locking down the site's navigation panel into position when the visitor scrolls up and down the webpage. You can use this both to allow your visitor to navigate more easily, and to keep your call to action in view.

Join online forums to learn even more about web design. You can also do a quick search online to find any information you seek on the web, and it is free.

Choose your color scheme wisely. It is important to have text that is easy to read on your chosen background color. There is data that shows that people have an easier time reading dark text on a light background. The opposite is still readable, but not optimal. If you can't decide if the colors are right, ask someone you know for feedback.

Don't make page sizes too big. Not everyone online has a fast connection, and if your website takes too long to load, people will lose interest. You do not want your page viewers to be stuck waiting for every page to download, or they may end up abandoning your site.

When creating a website, it is important that you limit the amount of fonts you use. Consider how the ones you choose appear on standard screens since serifs like Times New Roman can be tough to read. Most sites use Verdana, which is easily read in different colors and sizes.

White can be a smart and effective choice when you're contemplating which color should be the background for your site. When you have a white background, your content will be easy to read, and it will also make your site appear more professional and trustworthy. Complicated background designs on the other hand can be distracting, and can make your website feel less professional. Backgrounds should be simple and subtle.

If you are thinking about different topics for websites, it is important that you secure a domain name for the site, immediately. Get creative and choose something you want, but reserve the name early to ensure you have it. Surprisingly, many people may have the same idea as each other. Great minds do think alike, after all!

From the suggestions outlined in the above article, you should now be all set to tackle the design of your web site. Establish a budget, ask for help from professionals if you need to, and start drawing sketches. If you get started as soon as possible, it will be easier to build an efficient, visually striking website.

When I design graphics that will be printed on papers, photographs, I use 300 dpi. However, for the graphics that will be used on websites I keep it to 72 dpi. When you use graphics in 72 dpi, the file size will be small and will let your website load faster.

I do not use a lot of images on my website. I use at least one and not more than 3 images per article. I also do not clutter my home page with background image, I use spot color for background, mostly white color. I rarely use banner.
