Why Increased Earning is Directly Proportional to Increased Expenses?

Have you ever realized, as soon as you start making more money, your expenses also increases. Why is that so? Why cannot we continue to spend the same amount after our income increases and save or invest additional income? When we earn well, why cannot we resist spending and save instead?
