Often webhosting companies shut down without any notice, why do the owners not sell their webhosting company and make some money, instead of disappearing suddenly causing problems for their customers.

Maybe running the business was too expensive for them and they could not sell the company. Instead shut down. In my observation, this mostly happens with reseller hosts.

Some small webhosts are only run by one individual. What happens if the individual did not give anyone else instructions, passwords, or access, and then dies unexpectedly? The host will also shut down unexpectedly. I am not saying this is always the case, but I am sure this has happened before.
