When is it time to upgrade your hosting plan? Most but nearly all website have started on a shared hosting plan regardless of how big that site is now. The time to upgrade is when you’re getting close to running out of storage or running out of bandwidth. Bizdustry suffered DDoS attacks, and a general increase in traffic loads as we grow. We were running on a VPS server from around 250,000 posts and upgraded to a dedicated a few months ago.

Being attacked is definitely a good reason to upgrade. One other thing is if your site suddenly goes viral for any reason and your host can't handle the load. You want someone who can handle thousands of users at once as well as storage if they post.
