I am curious as people say different things.

To me a successful forum would be having users on every day who are active. I don't think you need a lot of members for this to be the case. I would say 10 active members is a good benchmark to say you have a successful forum or not.

When my forums start getting over 100 posts every day and over 1000 visits every day I would consider my forums fairly successful. In order to get over 100 posts every day, I might need hundreds of thousands of members on my forums. My forums also need to be ranked high on search engines to receive 1000 visits daily.

When it comes to a forum being successful, it actually depends on what the forum owner have in mind when starting his forum project. I have seen some people who never used any kind of monetization on their forum. They have no need of trying to make money from their forum. So, for this kind of person, making money from a forum isn't seen as success for him. He just needed activities and traffic to see his forum as being a successful project.
