The problem of spamming is one of biggest challenges most forums face on daily basis and it's one of reasons why security checks are set up right from the registration stage in the forum to prevent bots from making their way easily into the forum.

If you're making use of anti-spam questions, which kind of questions do you usually set to be checked before registration will be completed? Most forum owners like to have their forum name spelled backwards.

I have been seeing a few videos on YouTube where they used robots to solve anti-spam questions! So, I think that there should be a system that would utilise questions/problems that could be solved by humans only. This may include complicated puzzles.

I mostly use captcha and have used the "answer this math question" or "What is the name of the site" and you'd have to type it out. Just anything that can stop bots from easily signing up.

And I second puzzles and what Google does with their captcha by telling you to pick items from a panel.

There was captcha which I came across when trying to register in one forum some years ago, I kept failing it to the point where I started looking at myself as if I was a robot 😂. It was a very funny day for me online that I wouldn't forget it so easily.

Forum owners face the challenge of spamming and implement security checks during registration to prevent bots from infiltrating the community. Anti-spam questions are commonly used, and they can range from simple tasks like spelling the forum name backward to more specific questions related to the forum's theme or niche. The goal is to find a balance between an effective spam filter and a user-friendly registration process while maintaining the forum's quality and engagement.

They are very important to be used in forums because forums have seen more spammers than social media platforms have. I keep wondering why they don't spam much on social media platforms but do it frequently on forums. When social media platforms have more users than forums but they play their hands more on forums.

Forum owners can use a variety of anti-spam questions during the registration process to make sure that new members are legitimate users and not automated bots trying to spam the forum.

❓They can ask simple math questions like what is 5 + 2?

❓Or identify the correct spelling: Appel, Apple, Applee, Appl?

❓Or select all the images that contain a traffic light (the most commonly used).

I have used forums which made use of all these kind of anti spamming checks and they all work very well. Although, there's one which I don't like facing whenever I'm registering in any forum. It's the one where I have to drag some icon into different boxes. I don't like that one at all, it's always stressing me out.

I have three forums. I use captcha, mathematical question (what is 2-2), and general question such as what is the name of this site as anti-spam questions. Well, I did not set these questions myself, these were there by default and I never though about changing these questions.

Their are few common questions which are :

  1. Simple math questions: "What is 2 + 2?" or "What is fifteen minus five?"
  2. Picture recognition: Show an image with objects and ask the user to select a specific object (e.g., "Click on the cat in the picture").
  3. Time-related questions: "What day of the week comes after Tuesday?" or "Is tomorrow a weekend?"
  4. Language-based questions: "What color is the sky?" or "Is water wet or dry?"
  5. General knowledge: "Who is the current President of the United States?" or "What is the capital city of France?"
  6. ReCAPTCHA challenges: These are more complex and involve identifying objects in images or solving puzzles.
  7. "I am not a robot" checkbox: A simple checkbox to affirm that the user is not a bot.
