What is DNS?

Advertisement Placeholder
DNS is a Domain Name System. The Internet's system for converting alphabetic names into numeric IP addresses. For example, when a Web address (URL) is type into a browser, DNS servers return the IP address of the Web server associated with that name. In this made-up example, the DNS converts the URL www.company.com into the IP address XXXX. Without DNS, you would have to type the series of four numbers and dots into your browser to retrieve the website, which you actually can do.

DNS means "Domain Name System". Basically it's the system that translates an domain name (www.google.com) into an IP address (173.194.40.174) which is the unique identifier of some piece of hardware on a network. You can understand the use for such a system : it's much easier to remember the name than the address. Moreover, a name can translate to several address depending on the time, the load of the server etc.

DNS (Domain name service) is the translation of human readable text, into IP addresses - but why is this so important?

Well, networks (and the internet is a very big one!) don't read domain names, they use IP addresses. DNS is responsible for taking a domain name i.e gelstudios.co.uk and converting it into an IP address such as 192.168.0.1

DNS stands for Domain Name Systems, it is a system which convert the alphabetic to numeric IP address. Like we purchase domain name and domain name always points to an IP address. So there is no need to remember IP address, it makes our task easy.

DNS means Domain Name System, it's an Internet service that translates domain names to IP addresses. Domain names are alphabetic and therefore easy to remember, the Internet is based on numeric IP addresses, so a DNS server is required for computers to communicate with one another.

The DNS is just a short name for domain name server and it is a place where your domain IP is being kept so that whenever somebody is searching for it it converts it to any website content.

I had heard of the term DNS and its full form but did not know what it actually mean, But now I understood DNS or Domain Name System is a technology that converts your domain name (url of your site) to numbers (IP address)

This is an absolutely well broken down explanation even better than what the poster did. The DNS is actually what makes is to able to name our sites as words instead of typing random numbers everytime you want to enter an address.
