What happens to the pension of a spouse who dies?

If you're married with a spouse, and they happen to die before they can take their pension, will that pension then go to the living family members? I was always curious how that works. If I have a pension and I die, does it go to my spouse and future kids? Or does that pension cease to be after I die?
