In the past, on previous websites the colour of the group ranks have been decided on the colour scheme of the theme. Normally I just stick to the normal colours, Admins & Mods, although I have sometimes used different colours such as, Admins & Mods.

Although I do normally prefer the admins colour being red, it stands out a little more than any other colour and is just generally known by everyone who uses forums that if the colour is red, they are more than likely an admin.

I just went with the colours that were on the forums rank images I got from a website.

I am the same, I also used green for Admin and light blue for Mods.
But I think the best colors are red, green or blue due to the fact that they are noticeable the fastest by the human eye.

It can vary on the colours of the forum I have. On my general chat forum we have Red for Admins and Blue for Moderators and on an entertainment forum I run with my boyfriend we have it set so that members can have their own custom colours if they wish and are VIP otherwise it's Green for moderators/GM's and then we have blue for admins on a promotion forum me and my boyfriend run and then light green for community team.

Administrator: Red
Moderator: Green or light blue
Premium: Gold or purple
Member: Default text color - mainly black, grey or white.

I mostly use:

Administrator: Blue
Moderator: Red/Black
Member: Black/Grey

It all depends on the forum software and theme I'm running.

Most of the time I do:
Admin: Red
Moderator: Green
Member: Black

I use Gold/Blue sometimes as well.
