What engages you to join a forum?

As forum owners, we all want to attract new members and grow our communities. But what is it that engages people to join a forum in the first place? I wanted to start a discussion about the factors that influence our decision to join and participate in a forum.

For me, the first thing that attracts me to a forum is the topic. If it's a topic that I'm interested in and passionate about, I'm more likely to want to join and engage with the community. I also look for forums with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, where members are respectful and helpful to one another.

Design and user experience are also important factors for me. A well-designed forum with an easy-to-use interface and intuitive navigation makes it more enjoyable to participate and contribute. I also appreciate forums that have active moderation and enforce clear rules and guidelines.

Of course, every person's preferences and priorities are different, and what engages one person might not engage another. That's why it's important for forum owners to understand their target audience and cater to their interests and needs.

I'd like to think that my forum conforms to those 3

I would probably say the first 4 options in the poll for me. Forums that are active really appeal to me as I know there will be ongoing discussions that I can get involved in. If I went on a forum and the last post was 2 or 3 days ago, I'd probably avoid signing up as it indicates there's not much happening and I'd probably post a few times, get bored and never log back on again.

I'll pretty much talk to anyone, so familiar usernames doesn't really sway me, but it was nice to see a few familiar names here when I signed up.

So here's a thing - everything on that list is secondary or tertiary in my world.

The #1 thing for me: does it have something that engages me such that I want to engage with it? Exactly what this is will vary but it's not quite the 'interesting niche' answer for me. It'll be either on a subject where I have an opinion and would like more opinions, or where I would like more information on something. It's certainly been the case that I've joined forums where the niche as a whole doesn't particularly interest me, or even that I'd like the people but sometimes a given place has something I'd want to engage with.

The #2 thing for me: does it have people I'd want to spend time with, after having sorted out #1? If a place is a place to go, ask a question and leave again, sure, fine, whatever, but it won't be my preference. I don't find Stack Exchange particularly *nice* as a set of communities even if I have asked questions over there over the years, and I bump into its content (often but not always Stack Overflow) occasionally. But once I've sorted that out, I'm much more likely to join if the people seem interesting - they don't have to be many, nor posting at all hours, but interesting people tend to be interesting for multiple reasons, and often react well to other interesting people.

Generally, if I'm passionate about the forum's subject and things like having a good layout, decent skin, and a decently active member base, I am likely to join and engage in the forum. I'm passionate about coding and have even tried registering on a few coding forums, but often times I don't stick around long because the technicalities of a lot of coding are beyond my comprehension, and other people are more expert than I am in the subject. So, even with the aforementioned being said, I can't always find myself engaging in forums I'm passionate about. There are specific factors in play on whether I would actively engage in the forum or not, mostly being entirely relatable to the content being posted.

When it comes to joining a new forum there are three things I look for and those are as follows

1. Plenty of activity, new threads, and recent posts
2. A niche that I have an interest in and I feel I can contribute to
3. A clean look and layout and one that looks professional

As long as I can tick all three of those off when I find a forum and I am debating on whether to join then I will join and become an active member there.

This is the third forum that I joined. I started exploring a forum in September last year. I was invited by a friend and it was forum RIf that developed my ability to do activities in a forum and that inspired me to engage with a forum. I learned many things in a forum like terms never encountered before and terms heard but not interested to know them. I realized they are important when I joined a forum.

I first take a look at the niche of the forum, if it's a subject I'm not interested in then I will not join the forum. Next I take a look at the activity of the forum, if there's been some content added recently then I will most likely join. Last I look at the theme and layout of the forum, generally I don't mind if a forum uses the default theme all that much these days since for some software, most themes are premium ones and a new admin may not have the funds to buy a premium theme right away. Though it's nice to see a logo representing their site, still that's not a deal breaker in which I join a forum or not.

When it comes to joining a new forum there are three things I look for and those are as follows

I voted for nice look and feel and recent activity. Recent activity is important to me because it shows people are still using the forum and it is not dead and retired. The nice look and feel is slightly important, if I don't feel like I can navigate the site I'm not going to want to be on there. Appearance is important, but really content wise is the most important thing.

Content and the general community vibe. ResetEra for example has tons of content but the community is often toxic and trying to keep up with the flow of posts on there feels impossible to want to even consider joining it.

If the niche of a forum isn't what my interest rests on, there's nothing that's going to get me to joining it. It's the most important factor for me. Now, after having an interesting niche and having registered, it's recent activities, fresh threads, posts and a good look that's going to keep me on the forum.
