A chairman is a person who may own the business. In many cases, a chairman may be the highest ranking official in the company. However, when it comes to Co-chairman, what are the responsibilities of such kind of person? Do they co-own the business?

A business with a Co-chairmanship ownership means the business is owned by more than one person. They are both the Heads in the business. The main decision making in the business is decided by those co-chairmans.

That is right. The co-chairman will have a say in how the business is run and will always have inputs in recruitment, planning, and revenue sharing. There are other things that he is expected to look at as far as the business is concerned as he is a part owner in the business.

Yes, the entire business management and decision making is their role. They head all the planning of the business. If it comes to recruitment, they decide those who are hired. If the business is progressing, they are the in charge. If the business is regressing, they are to be blamed.

Well, I think that a co-chairman is a person who may be considered an alternative person to chairman. Co-chairman may have many different duties. When a single chairman may not be able to handle things alone, they may consider electing a co-chairman.

A co-chairman isn't an alternative person. He's the same person with the other person who's the chairman of the company. They are 50-50 in their management power in the company. They share equal power in the company.

Well, this is exactly why I said that a co-chairman could be an "alternative" in the sense that he may share and enjoy the same power as a chairman does. However, in many cases, the co-chairman may be less powerful than a CEO of the company.

Do you know what it means to be an alternative? You're an after thought when the main person who's in charge isn't available. An alternative doesn't have the same say or authority like the main person in charge. The role of a co-chairman isn't seen as the work of an alternative. A co-chairman is the co-owner of a business. He's not an alternative.

I think it depends on the company's policy, a co-chairman might be just an assistant of the chairman, an heir apparent, or another owner of the company. A chairman might also be an elected board member who has stakes in the company and not necessarily the single owner of the company.

The concept of co-chairman is something that I see as a position that is equally shared between two people. There is no difference between those two people who are the co-chairman of the company. Every decision making in the business or company is always going to come from both of them and not one of them.
