Traffic Through Backlinks

There are two purposes of building backlinks, one, to improve your search engine ranking, and two, generating traffic. Through backlinks, you can generate organic traffic (when your site ranks better and Internet searchers visit your site through search engine result page) and direct traffic when users or the visitors of the site where you have created backlinks visit your site.
Do you receive traffic through the backlinks you have created?

Backlinks are important, but I have heard they changed a bit in how they work. I used to post on forums with my link and hoped that would be enough, but I don't think that works like it used to. I think in order to get good backlinks, they need to be on popular or sites that get a lot of traffic. Posting it at a dead site for example probably won't help you any.

Links are the backbone of internet, so building them it's been part of internet.
Some places are more strategics than others, but all of them are good in general.
Just adding them where they become relevant to topic(s) makes them even better.
General rule, creating back-links is very important.

I can't really gauge the effect of backlinks without looking at metrics like DA, DR, TF etc.. but I'm a little cynical about their ability.
