The worst ways to advertise on your site

What do you think are some of the worst ways of advertising your site? Maybe something you tried?

Back when I was 9 and still a noob, I tried advertising my forum by spamming the link on another forum. That didn't go too well. They came and hacked my forum. I've learned my lesson. That is not a way to advertise, just isn't good. Besides who would want to join your forum if you go around spam advertising it anyways?

So list some bad ways of advertising your site that either are harmful to you or your site, or just don't even help. You can even share an experience you had trying this method.

Yeah I hate people putting manual signature on their replies on a forum!

Manual links? Seriously?
I find this type of fake sig's only on those forums with limitations to users less than a certain amount of posts. Newbies tend to do this a lot.
