I think there is some debate whether or not it is a west or north Germanic language. Well, from looking at today's English or middle English (Shakespeare's time), it just doesn't sound like Dutch or German. Anyway, even though England was invaded by West Germanic tribes, it was soon invaded by Vikings. They added basic words like "the", "they", "are", "egg" etc..
Of course, the native Briton language, the language before the conquest, added some words also and French probably made up 3/4 or more of the language after the Norman conquest in 1066.
