Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client—typically a web server (website) and a browser, or a mail server and a mail client (e.g., Outlook).

SSL has gotten an increased importance over the past few years, with Google to penalize sites that do not have SSL and some browsers are now also show warnings to users when they visit sites without SSL.

Implementing SSL, however, can sometimes be difficult to implement depending on your community.

I personally like to use it on all my sites as it helps users tell their information is secure.

Do you use SSL on your site? Why or why not?

We were somewhat forced to go to SSL by our host a few years back. Our members also started to complain when they had security warnings thrown in their faces. We told them that we don't collect any valuable information from them such as credit card info, so they were perfectly safe, yet they still put up a fuss.

I use Namecheap, which provides 20 domains with free certificates for the first year. In the second year, you will have to pay for SSL. On a few of my websites, I use SSL.
