SMF 2.1.4 was another sprawling release, with plenty of enhancements & fixes! Note that we departed a bit from our normal process in 2.1.4, and improved the attachment upload process & UI. Yes, it needed some simplification. As much as possible, we did it in a way that minimized impacts on existing mods & themes. We hope you like it.

What's Coming Next
We are working on a series of changes to make SMF databases more consistent with future versions of MySQL.

We think it is important to get to proper UTF8MB4 support. This implementation will be similar to the 2.0 implementation of MySQL's "UTF8" - there will be a utility in the admin panel to change your tables from UTF8 to UTF8MB4. Also, starting in 2.1.5, new installs will utilize UTF8MB4 going forward.

Those interested in following the progress of 2.1.5 may do so up on GitHub:

Seems like a big improvement. Good to see. :D

With more to come in the future :).
I honestly feel like SMF being the only decent free OS software having a decent development nowadays. Their history might not been what it should be, but at least it is now, which counts for something I think. So, it's good to see them developing still on a frequent basis.

Agree fully.. even with the "warts" and "poison" involved between the developers and 3rd parties... overall it FAR exceeds the two other major competitors of a basic fora software that the majority of users are aware of... myBB and phpBB. Yes, there are outliers like Discourse..... but pretty sure that Discourse can't be ran on a standard LAMP stack like the prior ones can be.
I WAS running my other site on SMF.. and changed to XF.... but the only reason was I wanted (no @Arantor not needed, but WANTED) certain additional features.

Agreed. The SMF development team and contributors may be a small group, but they are a very devoted group with tons of knowledge.

They inspire me to learn more every day.
