Shoutboxes?

I know a lot of forums use the shoutbox. Have you managed a forum with a shoutbox? Does it affect the post counts that the forum gets?

I am staff on forums with shoutboxes, however, I have never used it for my forums. I believe every discussion should happen in the main sections.
