Removing Text and the Increase in Rankings

I was reading that removing text on some sites increased the ranking and the only reason I figure is cause the text was spammy, in effect, what was seen as some attempt to game the system for ranking. Anyway, though, we need to define what looks like manipulation with what is not. What do you figure is the best way to go about this so you can write text on your site that doesn't lower rankings?

I haven’t removed text from my pages that resulted in higher rankings on the search engines. I’ve added text that has actually increased my rankings though.

Personally, I would say that everything depends on the context and the quality of the content being removed from your website. If you're removing duplicate contents, low quality contents, irrelevant and outdated contents, there's a big change doing that will improve your ranking.
