Points system?

Do you have some type of points system on your forum where members can earn so many points or $$ for each time they post? Do you then offer some type of shop or store where members can spend those points or $$ to get certain things? What do you offer if you do have a shop?

This is something I tried implementing on my forum a year ago, but it never really was something my staff team and I thought was a good idea.

I don't like the idea, as it has never panned out on any of the forums I have been on.

I have pretty much always had a points system on forums that I have owned. This forum is probably the first one that didn't.

I have had some forum currency system, where people could buy premium things on the forum! It gives them a real goal on the forum and keeps them posting, sometime I would give them out free as giveaways. Or I did an auction, as where often as not people got things quite cheap. It was like 5VC per thread and 2VC per post. It might be a bit a high, but I liked the way it was and worked well!

I have had it on a few forums that I've owned, and I haven't had them on some others. It depends on the purpose for me. If there is a reason to have the points system due to services being sold/traded on the site or having some good bonus things to sell in a shop in exchange for points, then it makes sense to have it. Otherwise it doesn't.

I just recently added this to a forum that I have. I thought it would be something fun to add to the forum, plus, it gives members a chance to be rewarded for their posting that they're doing around the forum.

Points systems are great and can help build activity, but I also think you have to have a forum in which it will work.
