MyBB vs phpBB

Advertisement Placeholder
I personally think phpBB is better, it's much easier to edit themes and install themes. The user permissions can be a bit overwhelming for those who are new to owning a forum however, so that's one advantage that MyBB has. I've recently seen more communities using phpBB over MyBB. Honestly it's been a bit since I've used MyBB, and I know a new update just rolled out the other day.

That really depends where you go looking; amongst the roleplay crowd, MyBB is hands-down the most prevalent of the self-hosting forum packages. As far as I can tell this is because their subaccounts feature is relatively mature, and adding new pages that use the forum theme is pretty easy - two things that I think phpBB doesn't have going for it by comparison.

One problem with MyBB involves lack of theme compatibility with new updates. Well, there's a way to work around it, however. Anyway, it's way more difficult to get an alerts system also.

Now, two advantages of MyBB is more extensions (mods) and automated updating for the core software. Well, it's not automatic, but you don't have to mess with files.

I quite like MyBB but it's very much a dying software now. There are only several big boards that use the software and even they are heavily modified.

I think it's a great free software though and if I didn't use Xenforo I would be using MyBB
