Who is working with MyBB? Who is thinking about it? What are some pros and cons? Myself, I see there are many free add-ons, seemingly more than the others and that's an advantage. Now, it is true the default theme is not mobile ready, but that can be fixed with a free or paid theme.
Yes, it's true that the default theme of MyBB is not mobile ready yet. There are so many free themes that can be visually appealing which can do a good job for you if that's what you're looking for incase you don't want to go down the path of using paid theme.
The real question is, does it have more quality add-ons that other free software. 😉
I know that in my short time with SMF I was sorely disappointed in the amount of quality add-ons available to do any heavy lifting.
The guy/gal that is admins the help site I originally set up has also commented on that aspect of it. They really wished they could get away with running XF on it but with the current drama over on the XF site thrre is even more concern about doing that. Seems there are several other (as Neo called them) Chief Inspector Clouseau's running around in a particular thread over there. I won't go into any more detail other than to state that it appears that rules for that support site only apply when certain people get their feelings hurt.
I have been trying to work with most of the forums to get to know them better since I cover a forum about forums.
I installed the latest MyBB on my OutdoorWrite.com website. So far, it reminds me of back when I used MyBB in the day.
I had to use an addon just to make it responsive. No out of the box mobile solution. Not very good. SMF is responsive and SMF looks like it came out of the 90s lol but it's way better than MyBB in terms of modernization.
For those who used the free forum software (the only one I have personal experience with is SMF), what are some of the major differences between MyBB and phpBB? Just curious.

I have a forum powered by MyBB and dear god the number of spammers that constantly sign up is annoying. I never had this issue with other platforms. Also I feel it's quite outdated too. I'm thinking about converting to another platform, for now I'm thinking maybe SMF and then later possibly either Woltlab or Xenforo. I just need to do so when I get the time.

You stole my words.
I once went to check my MyBB forum after two days and I had over 100 new sign ups.
Just like you I am also thinking to convert my forum to another platform. I am not ready yet for premium platform and I might try phpBB or SMF.

Yep! The issue with spammers is one of the biggest challenges of using MyBB. Maybe probably because it's already an outdated software, it's why spammers make their way through it easily. A lot of webmasters are already moving/switching away from the software.
One of the easiest and low hanging fruit options for scripts is to implement use of CloudFlare Turnstile.
For the automated stuff it works well. For human spam, not a lot is going to catch it other than time and their getting listed (IP/email) in StopForumSpam, which should also be integrated into the scripts.
I've been playing around with phpBB3, as well. I figure if I am going to give admin advice on AAF, I might as well master my skills with as many software platforms as possible
I used phpBB2 which is way different than v3.
I like v3 quite a bit.
Like Jason said, it's mobile-responsive right out of the box. MyBB not being responsive makes it feel abandoned. Everything is responsive aside from MyBB...
I understand the negativity with MyBB, but I think people aren't giving it much a chance. I mean, despite its big problem, you can find a lot of pros rather than cons.

Sorry.. but in todays society lack of built-in responsive should be a major no-go to anyone concerned with running a site.
Other add-ons and associated are not that big of a deal, but we ARE in the year 2024 and mobile responsiveness has been a thing for several years. If a script is still ignoring that natively then it simply should be kicked to the curb until it can get to what is a base modern standard. And sadly.... myBB and their developers have fallen asleep at the wheel and are in the process of running off the cliff in the curve of the road.
When I tried phpBB first time, I found it difficult to use. Therefore, when I started another forum, I used MyBB. Now, I am thinking to go back to phpbb as compared to phpBB MyBB is not very good, my forum looks so cluttered.

You cannot expect to build a thriving community on MyBB. Not when your competitors offer the same or better than what you could offer on MyBB but on a much better and modern platform.
