Maintaing your advert thread in other communities

Many of us, having a message board, have stumbled upon different communities that allow you to promote in a thread your own community, and then bump that thread (usually with some info) periodically.

Do you tend to advertise in these zones?
Do you have a visit-to-bump routine?
Have you observed an increase of visitors doing this?

I see a lot of people doing this and I am about to jump into, but I am not sure how effective it is and how it compares to say, buying a spot for a small banner advertisement in the community index.

I like to have a staff member do it for me :yum:

However I make a flyer for them to use as the forum and I do pay them monthly as I know how annoying it is.
