Machines vs Other Weight Room Stuff

My friend was saying machines were a waste of time and that even dumbbells were superior. His logic was that machines do not use your own body weight. Anyway, I agree with him, but even machine work is better than nothing.

Few equipments such as leg press, rotation machine are useless but the huge machines like treadmill, cycle and smith machine are quite advantageous.

For house entertainment and cleaning up I think that machines are better because they facilitate a lot of stuff done manually you do within minutes with a machine.

Sometimes it's tough to get the right balance with dumbbells. Nonetheless, if you can, you can mimic the machines but get a better workout. How do you all handle balance with dumbbells?
