Is it permitted for you to alter the rental apartment?

I too rent an apartment, but the landlord is highly controlling, and I was never permitted to do anything without first getting permission from them. I'm not going to talk about it longer, but I needed his permission to move the refrigerator and drill the necessary hole in the wall.
