I am looking to establish a start up, but the .com of the name, the name is 4 letter only, that I thought of is already taken and the seller wants $25,000 for it. I dont have that type of money for a startup, hence wondering if the .co of that domain would be a bad choice or what? Its a 4 letter domain hence its a premium .co as they say it.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe try: .me , .us ?

if your domain is small, a small extension is recommended. you can't put a small name with the ending ".monster, .health" or something big else ...

if you don't mind, what's the domain name?

It depends on the niche and target audience as well.

What about the .net extension for the same keyword? If it's available, you can take it up. To be honest, .co is a good domain extension as well but there aren't too many websites with this extension when compared to .com TLD. It's your call. Try to get something that is popular with your target audience. It could be your own country domain extension as well.

In my opinion, no, you better try .net or even .me for .co domains as far as I know they are quite expensive and difficult to index they are also made to receive an impressive number of traffic. You need to think a lot about the niche of .co domains, because is suitable for quite large businesses. just my opinion

It depends on the business you are starting up, there are other options you can use but it still depends on the niche you are in.
Use other alternatives like . net or .org

Yes it is a good option if you can spend extra money as it's costly than other TDL but it looks decent and now a days many branded company is starting to use .co extension. You can called it web 2.0.

On the condition that the .com is unavailable or unaffordable, another preferable alternative if it were me would be .net rather than .co.

If website name is registered trademark by the seller you could have legal issue if not .co will be a good alternative for .com. Most of popular websites buys domain protection so if someone wants to buy same domain with .net or .org extension or .tv extension this will be not possible.

I think you can still try .co its still okay in case .com isn't available or you need to spend more to buy the site .com domain extension

.co is not a great alternative especially if your first choice was .com. I would suggest trying to find another popular extension to go for such as .net as they look more trustworthy to potential users and customers. It also depends on the niche like someone mentioned above. If its for a business, stay away from .co if you can. But if its for a general discussion forum or a blog, then a .co extension could potentially work.

.co is not a good extension for a start up. Now imagine d .com domain later got sold it can push down your website because Google will easily crawl .com extension than .co extension

I think the closest alternative to .com for a brand is .net,for an organisation.org. If your desired domain name is taken, I'll suggest you just add a letter or number to it and try again. Getting 4-5 words domain is very difficult these days.

Dot co is also a good alternative to dot com extension and people are using it. In fact, more dot co extension are sold on daily basis on domain name marketplace like DAN.com, Afternic.com and Sedo.com

If you are not satisfy with with dot co extension, you can also choose dot Org or Dot net extension of the said domain name you want to register. I hope this helps a bit

You can use any extension you want, it does not matter. What ultimately matters is whether you have optimized your site well or not. However, a lot of webmasters say you should use an extension that can reflect your niche. For example, if you are building an online store, you can use dot store instead of dot com, if your website is for internet and information technology, you can use tech or net. I think you can use dot co instead of dot com

Extension does not matter, you can choose any extension you want and still rank well on search engines. Choice of extension is purly a personal preferance. When I launched my first website, I used xyz extension, I also had a dot com extension, but xyz site was ranked higher.

If you're looking for a .com domain that's taken, . co might be a good option. It looks similar and since it's a short TLD it's easy to remember. ... co is so similar to .com, users might confuse them, and visit the wrong website.

You don't really need to focus on any specific domain extension, you may choose what ever you want and still good to go. I have tried a lot of domain extensions. Once I had a xyz domain which ranked higher than dot com.

Not choosing whatever you want because domain extension like .com ,.net , usually help in terms of traffic and many more ,that is more reason why you have to focus more on domain extension too. When building a blog

Exactly the most majority of websites are switch of use xyz than com domain name so many PTC, hyip, forums are using xyz extension so that is the reason behind their popularity.
