John Madden, the recently deceased popular football (American) commentator had a laid-back and easygoing style that related to people. Also, he wasn't perfect, kind of like the comedian Chris Farley, but that made people feel at ease with him.

How can we relate to people and be more "down to earth"?

First, know your audience. You must have an idea of who is going to read your content.
Create a persona in your mind about your target audience.
Build a connection through your writing to make them feel that you are talking to them on their level.
Be helpful. Be informative. Be clear in what you are trying to tell them.
