As a freelance writer, I've found that "cold calling" is the best way to get work.

Email/call the blog or website and pitch your services. Make sure you have an example for them to look at. It better be awesome!

I have quite a few clients. I make a supplemental income from it. Eventually, I'll turn it into an agency. But I'm watching the economy right now.

If we indeed do go into the big bad recession, freelancing might be the smart thing to do!

Using sites like Upwork have proven to be a bit of a waste of time for me. I've applied to many freelance positions, but usually get no responses.
Update: I did get a response to something. I probably am going to turn it down in the end as it's actually not even freelance. It's unpaid moderation of a Discord server for a content creator with a small amount of subs and iirc the server isn't even 'public' yet.
