How strict are you with avatars on your forum or blog?

When it comes to owning either a blog or a forum, most, if not all software allows members to register and upload a an avatar to express themselves on the site whether it be a picture of themselves or something that represents them. This can always be turned off per the owners decision so that everyone just has the default image for their avatar but most tend to allow this with strict rules on what is allowed and not allowed.

I myself don't mind allowing avatars on blogs or forums I run as long as they are safe for work and do not contain any adult content in them at all, I feel this is fair as you never know who may come across your site and see these avatars and it can give you a bad reputation if you do not state their may be adult content on the site.

How strict are you with rules for avatars on your blog or forum? Do you have rules in place to prevent any adult content being used in your site?

Allowing your users to use avatars on your forum can be a whole lot of fun, and also it is flexible for some of the users as some would not want to show their faces or are not comfortable with showing their faces.

I don't own a forum or blog for now but i honestly don't see anything wrong with members uploading an avatar to express themselves. I actually like it. I would give my members the freedom to make use of avatars when i own a forum or blog.

The most important thing is how the users are going to use it at the end of the day. I do not want people to be promoting hate or any kind of political kind of stuff using their avatar .

Although I don't have a forum, but even if I have one, I wont stop people from using there avatar on by site because there is freedom of expression and they are expressing them selves.

I don't allow offensive avatars (indicative of sexual or sexually inappropriate). I also do not allow avatars that impersonate someone (for example using celebrity's pictures as an avatar). However, there are some exceptions, though

I am quite lax when it comes to avatars, but some forums demand that avatars should not be more than a certain amount of megapixels. This surprises me quite a bit, if I am being honest.

I don't see anything wrong with avatars; it makes the forum more fun and entertaining. It's great to have, for example, your favorite movie character as your avatar, but everything has boundries; for example, sexual content should not be allowed.

I go based on typical search engine guidelines. So no nudity, vulgarity, violence, etc. and anything outside of that is fine. I want my websites to be safe for work and daily use and be friendly to advertisers as well as users.

I have a WordPress blog and it comes with some custom avatars like gravatar. They're okay and doesn't consume bandwidth. Since I just need the comments, it's fine to me. If you're building a membership blog, you'll need good avatars for your community members to stand out.

It is very necessary for you to stress it for your members to upload avatars on their profile because it makes their account real and professional like something that a real user is making use of. But I don't think you can ban your members for not uploading avatars.
