How much knowledge about hosting, servers, domain registration, and technical expertise do you have as a community owner?

Do you feel that most community owners need to have some kind of knowledge about operating servers, databases, and such? Especially those who are using self-hosted platforms.

Of should they just rely on the hosting service to meet their needs and wants for support?

Tell us what you think about this topic.

I only have a "little" bit. Cut my teeth on Linux when Slackware came out.
I try to avoid using Windows as much as possible on the web as a server.
The techy types will usually self host on a VPS/dedicated solution. They tend to enjoy the "headaches" of running a server setup in addition to managing a site.

Less and less each year. I used to be pretty good at getting whatever I needed done on the server side, but I have faded away from the server side and fallen in love with the cloud side of things. Well, a love/hate with the cloud side of things lol.

I was like that at a time.

But now I have a job where I work on networks, switches, and servers all day long. Now, I'm starting to understand things that I never really got to well before.

I'm getting good at using PuTTy for example!
