There are many different companies that have different kinds of departments. For example, a company may have marketing department, sales, department, human resource department, etc. This entirely depends on the size of the business. So, how many departments should you have in your company?

Creating the departments in your workplace or your business can be dependent on the number of staff that you have on ground. How can you start having more departments when you don't have the staff that will occupy it. In my personal business, I have just two departments and I am able to pay the staff in those departments monthly without feeling the heat that comes with it.

It depends on the size of the company and the business model. However, no matter the size of the business some departments are essential, for instance, the account department and marketing and sales department are essential in all kinds of businesses. If your business is very big, you also need HR department. If you are in production, you also need a separate department to look for product development and research.

The size of your company is what determines the number of departments you're going to be needing in your business. In my business of poultry and fish farming, I have logistics, sales, processing and accounts department.

There could be a small company and in that small company, there might be many different kinds of departments. So, the size of the company could still be relevant. Small companies usually do not have a human resource department with them. They mainly have a central department where all decisions are taken.

This is true. Every firm that is serious about what they are doing should definitely have a finance department plus a marketing department. These two are crucial to everything that happens in most businesses. So, no matter how we look at it, it is very important we consider setting up some of those departments that will be on help to the growth of your business.

In many small business settings, a single department might be handling different things at the same time. This entirely depends on the kind of business you are running. You can also merge two different kinds of departments if you need to do so.

I don't see how possible it is going to be for a business that is very small in size to have so many department because they don't even have the capacity to run the business with so many departments. Also the financial aspect of running a business that is small in size is not going to make it possible for them to have several departments.

It could be possible. For example, a small business may consist of 20 team members. They could create a subteam of different kinds of members and create different departments assigned to each team. Having said that if a business is just too small, then the chances are that it may not consist of too many departments.
