How long do you spend in the thought/creation process

In thinking about the topic, niche, what you are going to add, and make different from the site, and in actually designing, getting the topics, and posts up before you advertise how long do you tend to take with all of that?

I guess it depends, right now I am making a new site and I spent about 4-5 days from starting thinking about the new site and getting the site up and running.
