The word "twitter" by definition does match up with the actual platform but most people don't know it for that and only know of the word now because of the platform.

Because of this, I have to wonder how hard it is to actually get a domain name like this to be established.

Another example is Tumlr.

Well, most of the dictionary domain in popular extension have gone. So, it's hard getting a domain like that again. There are millions of people who specializes in searching for such domain and register them in order to sell them. But, such domain may gotten from domain marketplace. You can search for them on domain marketplace. If it's available, the marketplace will guide you on how you can get it.

It'll be very difficult I tell you because even if you visit Twitter.com, it'll still take you to the web version of the platform so I think there's nothing more you can do. These established sites always put this into consideration too.

I feel it would be very difficult to get a domain name like "twitter" to be established. On another note, it might be as difficult as we all feel it is, but all the same, i guess it's difficult.

The domain Twitter would have no commercial value if the company Twitter was not able to build its brand. Recently, I heard someone say "people are coping names from big companies. They have even named a forest by coping the name from ecommerce giant Amazon). This person thought the Amazon jungle name got from the Amazon company.
