Most of the time, the customer is always asked to make payment before their orders are being taken seriously. There is no point taking an order that didn't come with payment. This is what I have worked for long to ensure that it doesn't happen in my business.
Payment validates an order in my business. If a customer doesn't make 100% complete payment for what they wish to order in my business, there is no order to process for the customer.Most of the time, the customer is always asked to make payment before their orders are being taken seriously. When I worked at the call center one of the times, we had to take orders over the phone. When on the phone our lines are being recorded. So when you get their credit card info for the order, you have to turn the recording off so as to not record it. We also cannot repeat the card number back, the customer has to read it off to confirm. Other support reps could catch that person's card if so.
I used my PC at work to do all this. We had a call client on the PC that would handle most. But that's probably what you'd have to do for most call centers doing orders. At least I would imagine.
The same way my business handle business orders for customers who walk into my business premises to order for my livestock is the same way I handle the orders for customers who are trying to make purchases over the phone.
I will take down the others they are trying to place and calculate the total amount of whatever they need and send them their bill and my business account number for them to make payment, right after the product will be delivered to them after it has been processed.
I think that handling orders over the phone could be a much harder task. This is due to the fact that the customer may not be present physically at the location, so there are chances that a customer may not get what he or she was expecting.
