How do you increase traffic to your forum?

What do you guys do to gain more traffic to your forum? Also do you use paid methods, or are these free methods of gaining more traffic? Also how successful have these methods been?

I am trying to do both. I have paid few people who login and post. Now I am trying the free ways of getting qualtiy postings.

I think that depends from forum to forum. The most important part is research. Who will be interested in my forum and where do they usually hang out?
Ask yourself that and when you find the answer to it you can find the answer to your promotion question

I think it really helps that I am active in several forums and I strive to post quality posts that others may find interesting. I find that being generally helpful people tend to get curious what you're about and eventually they end up clicking on your profile or signature and follow any links that you're associated to. Friends and family are generally supportive so they at least visit to see what you're up to so I occasionally will post on Facebook about my website.

I increase my forum's traffic by using promotional forum and social media websites.

My traffic comes from social media and all other promotional forums. I do lot of post exchange as well.
