If you are not very comfortable in giving away you personal information, you can just do one thing, instead of sharing your information on every site you join, share your information on just one site and share link from that site on other sites. For instance, instead of giving out your personal info on freelancing sites, you can share links to your Facebook or LinkedIn profiles. By the way, how comfortable are you about giving your personal information.

It's impossible to avoid giving out online info to legit companies. However, I do try to avoid giving out my bank routing and account number to all but the most trustworthy sites. It's a reasonable safeguard, but surely someone who is obsessed with safety cannot join anything on the internet.

Anonymity to a certain extent is important to me, that is, you should know who to give your data to and who not in a forum, you don't need to give more data about yourself if you don't want to, privacy is something important nowadays to take care of, in a world where we are increasingly monitored, don't you think?
