Honestly, a hosted forum is a better option as you will have complete control over everything. However, we have to admit that forums are not that popular anymore and it's hard to find loyal users these days.

So, would it be easier to deal with a reddit community? You can always keep in touch with users even if you give up on the forum and it doesn't cost much at all and the downside is, you will not have any say in the community design and such.

So, what are your thoughts on this?

In my opinion, a reddit community is better than a hosted forum because like you said, forum are not so popular anymore and a lot of people have lost interest in it.

If you have managed to build your reputation, you might be able to build a strong community on Reddit, but reaching that point is very difficult. Plus, you never own your the community you have built on Reddit.

I think Reddit is better because hosted forums lost popularity quite some time ago, and not so many people have an interest in them. Reddit is great because you can find lots of funny memes, interesting topics, news, a great community, and more.

Reddit has control over your referral links while if you have a personal forum this will not be the case because for Reddit use it is restricted to number of karma but people find it is easier to blog on Reddit than personal forum.

Reddit has a lot of issues because it is a few people that generally control all boards on there which is not a good thing. The same can be said for forums but forums are much smaller and if you get banned from one, you can join another. In some cases, Reddit will outright ban you from every subreddit.

The advantage of reddit is that it's established already so you'll have access to free traffic and content hosting. However they're strict with regulation so you have to adhere strictly to rules or get banned. A self hosted forum gives you total control but you have to work for traffic and others.

The level of effort that is going to take you before you can build a great Reddit community is going to be so demanding and challenging because it is not something that is easily achieved compared to how you can be able to deal with running a hosted forum.
