I don't know if this is the technical term for it but it is what I use. It is when a domain expires and the owner misses the renewal date and you are able to buy it from underneath them without them being able to do much of anything. I only saw this happen twice and boy was it a mess for the original owners!

I once read news that a boy in Argentina was able to buy a Google Argentina domain when it was expired and Google had not renewed the domain yet. They paid $700 to get the domain back. This has never happened me but once my client lost her domain because she forgot to renew it.
