Every time I switch to a new company, I make sure I'm getting at least 80% more than what they were paying me in the previous company. It's a difficult job to make them agree to your demand since they will always be saying that they are on a budget so they can't pay that much. But if you really prove that you are worth what you are asking for, they will even give you more. One mistake people do is that they reveal their previous salary to the new company. We should not do that. Rather we should ask the company first how much they are willing to pay. And then play our cards. Negotiation is a skill. Many deserving people end up getting less pay because of not having this skill.
